Deer Season Calls for Driver Vigilance to Avoid Accidents

October 5, 2014

Deer-breeding season is at hand so our Cincinnati Accident Lawyers want to urge drivers throughout Ohio and Northern Kentucky to be extra vigilant when traveling wooded or rural roads as this is when deer are most active.

More than a million deer-auto accidents occur each year and result in more than $4 billion in vehicle damage, according to State Farm. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) research indicates that about 200 of those incidents result in a human fatality.

Deer-breeding season runs from October to January. During this time of year, here are five things that drivers can do to avoid a car-deer accident:

Five Deer-Driver Safety Tips

Tip No. 1: Know that deer-car collisions are statistically most likely to happen on two-lane wooded or rural roads.

Tip No. 2: Scan for shining eyes along the road. When you see a pair, be on alert.

Tip No. 3: Know that deer travel in packs. Where there is one, there are probably more.

Tip No. 4: Just like the proverb, deer will freeze in headlights become spellbound. When you see one, slow down and flash your lights at it.

Tip No. 5: Avoid swerving away from a deer as this can confusion it and prompt a collision instead of avoiding one. Simply driver more slowly or stop to allow the deer to pass.
